In 1858—the year following the Great Fire of Meireki, which had devastated Edo and claimed 100,000 lives—the Shogunate launched fire-prevention measures and organized the "Edo Firefighting Corps."
The corps was led by a *Hatamoto* (high-ranking retainer) serving as the fire-prevention officer, supported by six *Yoriki* (mounted officers).
Beneath them, a force of thirty *Doshin* (constables) was established and provided with funding for their duties.
Ando Hiroshige was born at the *Doshin* fire-prevention quarters in Nihonbashi; after his father retired, he succeeded to the post of *Doshin* and dedicated himself to fire prevention.
However, unable to abandon the passion for *ukiyo-e* (woodblock prints) he had harbored since youth, he eventually passed the *Doshin* position on to his child to devote himself fully to art, becoming a master of landscape prints.
He also created captivating depictions of himself in his firefighting attire from his days as a *Doshin*.
